New Products at Healthy Living and Cafe (South Burlington, VT)

Organic Yuzu: These will look like a lumpy mandarin in shape, is about the size of a tangerine, and is super yellow.  It’s the most popular of all citrus in Japan, and it’s mostly the rind that is used in many types of dishes.  The juice is said to be good for the skin, the rind is what you’re most commonly after for culinary use.

Organic Variegated Pink Lemons: These aren’t as pink as you think. Tastes like lemon, looks like ?

Organic Satsuma Mandarins:
We’ve talked about these before, they’re supersweet and easy to peel.  Best when heavy for their size, bright orange, and not at all squashy (though they may give a bit when you squeeze them).

Organic Pomelo: These are big, much bigger than a grapefruit.  They can be pink, white, or more rose/grapefruit colored in the center, and the rind can vary from bright green to almost lemony yellow.  They are super fragrant, and are generally cut in half and eaten with a spoon (à la grapefruit) or peeled, sectioned, and eaten in slices.  Fun fact! Terms concerning the anatomy of a citrus: the pith is the white part between the skin and the sections, the part between sections is called the membrane, and a section without pith or membrane is called a “supreme.”

Organic Pink Lady Apples: New Crop! Crisp, sweet, tangy, this is a great apple.

Organic Braeburn Apples: New Crop! Sweet and tangy, aromatic and juicy, super crisp, smooth texture.

Organic Kumquats: You eat these little guys whole! I would dearly love to see someone candy them this year.  The ones that we will get this time around look more like the ones below than the more orange and even littler ones you might see later this year.

Organic Meyer Lemons: Meyer lemons are thought to be a cross between mandarins and lemons – they have a smoother, more orange flesh, and a spicier, more complex flavor. They are much sweeter than regular lemons and have a very distinctive flavor.  Only available seasonally, these are excellent for desserts due to a lower acid profile

Organic Citron aka Buddha’s Hand: An important ingredient in the US for holiday fruit cakes, the citron is not used for it’s juicy pulp like other citrus, rather the skin is zested and the pith (the white part between the outer layer of skin and the juicy pulp) is chopped and candied.  In fact, good luck getting to the pulp, because this citrus is almost all skin and pith.

Organic Makrut Limes: Available for a short season, the peel of this lime is used for zest in many curry pastes, and the juice adds sour flavor to Thai Tom Yum soup.  Also known as Kafir Limes, there’s a movement to change the name of the fruit because the origins of the word “Kafir” mean that it is offensive in some cultures.  This lime is for use in authentic Thai cuisine!

Organic Calamondin Sour Oranges: This orange has a sweet rind and a sour fruit, great for making into a lemon-ade like drink, or more interesting desserts.  Used traditionally in many dishes in the Philippines, it’s used especially on fish.

Organic Key Limes: Key Limes are much smaller and sweeter than regular limes! They are used in that most favorite of pies.  Available through the winter.

Organic Kumquats: You eat these little guys whole! I would dearly love to see someone candy them this year.  The ones that we will get this time around look more like the ones below than the more orange and even littler ones you might see later this year.
