Wine of the Week – Straight Line Syrah 2007
From the Santa Barbara area of California, this wine comes from a high quality, low production winery only sold in a few states in the country.Vermont is lucky to be one of them! Not for the faint of heart, this is a full throttle, voluptuous style of Syrah.
Owner and winemaker Jon Grant is assistant wine maker for cult Zinfandel producer Turley and has done stints at other top producers including Plumpjack, Corison and Robert Mondavi. Straight Line allows him to further explore his winemaking prowess with Pinot Noir and Syrah.
Pulled from McGinley Vineyard (formerly Westerly Vineyard) just east of Santa Ynez. McGinley, influenced by the coastal weather, provides the all important warm days and cool nights that allow a long hang time and full ripening. Hand sorted and cold soaked for 24 hours to extract maximum color, and then brought up to temperature to allow spontaneous fermentation to occur. The Syrah was co fermented with 3% Viognier to add aromatics and complexity.
Aromas of blackberry, rose petal, and baking spice leap from the glass. The palate is full of blueberry, cinnamon, black pepper and dark cherry. Full bodied, rich and saturated this is sure to please the hedonist in you! 150 cases produced.
