K2 + YOU
Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin consisting of K1, K2 and K3. It’s involved with clotting the blood, from the German word Koagulation. K1 is found in the highest amounts from leafy green vegetables, while K2 is found in fermented foods like sauerkraut and natto. It is also found in egg yolks and grass-fed butter. K3 is a synthetic form. The body is capable of converting K1 to K2, but not at the best rate. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone, or MK-7) is much more biologically active than K1.
Vitamin K2 is essential for bone, cardiovascular and nervous system health. It is essential for normal cell formation. Vitamin K2 works in the liver and directs calcium, much like a roundabout, safely transporting it towards our bones and teeth. Without K2 and adequate amounts of Vitamin D, calcium is likely to get into tissues where it doesn’t belong, such as blood vessels. Studies have shown that K2 reduces arterial calcification and death due to cardiovascular disease (Rotterdam). Several proteins are dependent on Vitamin K2, such as osteocalcin, promoting stronger and more resilient bones. Another protein called MGP works with Vitamin K2 to prevent blood vessels and soft tissue from hardening.
Vitamin K2 has many breeds, but MK-4 and MK-7 are promoted for human health and have the most studies. It is typically not found in multivitamins. Supplementing with vitamin K2 is a great protocol for overall health, especially for those with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, those at risk for osteoporosis and preventing prostate cancer. Consult your healthcare professional before using this product if you are taking anticoagulants such as warfarin/Coumadin or have other health concerns.
Newborns are often injected with vitamin K1 to protect against HDN, a serious bleeding disorder. For parents who choose to give their newborn an oral solution while also breastfeeding, it is absolutely critical to use it for the full three months, as directed by a pediatrician.
