Bread and Butter Farm- Stage One of New Greenhouse Underway!

Bread and Butter Farm in Shelburne,VT began in October of 2009 when two families came together and created a community farm, growing and raising a diverse selection of products they believe are staples for themselves and customers. They produce whole grain, naturally fermented German bread, fresh, creamy raw milk, 100% grass-fed beef, a diverse array of nutrient packed greens (year round), and pasture-raised pork.

The farm has become quite popular for its on-farm store (open year round/daily) and well-liked community events such as their Silo Sessions, a monthly concert series in the bakery or Burger Nights, where guests munch on 100% grass-fed burgers while listening to live music on the farm. Check out their website for more info on these great events!

Like many farms around the state of Vermont, Bread and Butter Farm suffered damage during Tropical Storm Irene last August. One of their greenhouses was destroyed by the damaging rains and winds that swept through the state. Earlier this year, they approached Healthy Living about partnering to build a new greenhouse to grow kale and cilantro in. We identified a need for a large quantity of both products to be sold in our Produce department and used in our Cafe. We agreed to finance the greenhouse in exchange for the product being grown in it.  With the greenhouse now going up, we are thrilled to see the plan take shape.  In the fall and throughout the winter, we’ll have tons of kale and cilantro from a farm right down the road to share with customers—we couldn’t be more thankful and happy about our partnership with such a great farm!

The greenhouse is being built by some of Bread and Butter’s terrific farmhands. They plan to finish putting in the remaining posts by Friday when a group of UVM students will assist in raising the hoops into place. Check back soon to see the next stage of greenhouse construction!
