Drink Great Wine Without Breaking The Bank

The holidays are over.  You bought presents, hosted family and friends for extravagant meals, opened expensive “special occasion” wines, and because of this, your bank account took a big hit.  If you still want to drink great wine in the New Year, but don’t want to spend a ton of money, let us guide you to some inexpensive bottles that really over-deliver.

When searching for inexpensive bottles, it is often a good bet to buy wines from lesser established regions and less well know grape varieties.  Our wine staff tastes through hundreds of bottles in deciding which ones to carry, and we would like to highlight a few bottles that we feel provide excellent quality at a modest price.

2 Copas is an Argentine wine that consists of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Malbec.  When we recently tasted it, we were all pleasantly surprised to find such high quality at such a low price.  Smooth and balanced, it features notes of cherries, plums, and a hint of spice.  At $7.99 this is a no brainer, crowd pleasing wine.

Pico Maccario Villa Della Rosa Barbera also represents an outstanding value.  Currently on sale for only $10.99 (normally $12.99), this Barbera showcases ripe dark fruits and fresh acidity.  It is a perfect pairing for pasta and pizza.

Evodia Garnacha has long been one of our favorite budget wines.  Year after year this old vine, un-oaked Garnacha drinks well above its $10.99 price tag.  Medium bodied, with elegant floral, red berry, and spice box notes, this wine tastes like it costs twice as much.

Matua Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand is one of the best Sauvignon Blancs we have come across for under $10.  Currently on sale for $9.99 (normally $12.99), this wine features grapefruit, gooseberry, and passion fruit flavors, all carried by lively, mouthwatering acidity.

Acrobat Pinot Gris from Oregon, currently on sale for $11.99 (normally $13.99), is another incredible value.  It is balanced and crisp, with notes of citrus and orchard fruit.  A second label of King Estate Winery, this wine competes with many higher priced Pinot Gris.

These wines represent only a small fraction of the fantastic, inexpensive wines we carry.  Stop by and talk to Brian, Dave, or Graham and let us help you find the perfect bottle at the perfect price.
