Going Gluten-Free, Part III: Pasta!
Going Gluten-Free is back again, and once again we have super-duper expert Trisha waxing poetic about some of her favorite gluten-free goodies. All of it’s available at Healthy Living, which, by the way, has the biggest Gluten-Free selection in the state! We’re proud to offer GF options that taste as good (if not better) than their counterparts with wheat.
First up is Trisha’s favorite, the Jovial Gluten-Free pasta. It’s a dried boxed pasta made in Italy, so it’s got the “street cred” pasta gourmands deserve. Trisha loves the capellini because it has the al dente texture of a semolina angel hair that poorly made gluten-free pastas lack. She’s tried each and every GF pasta on the market and these take the cake time and time again. They’re made with brown rice flour, which provides a nutty taste and lovely texture. We sell the following from Jovial, all of which are organic: Capellini, Caserecce, Fusilli, Penne, and Spaghetti. *Trisha tip: toss capellini with olive oil, a diced tomato or two, parm, feta, kalamata olives, fresh basil, and minced onion for a Mediterranean treat.
Another winner is the Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta. This one is loved by Trisha’s family, so you know it’s good enough for the non-GF. Tinkyada is perfect for family meals because it offers such a wide range of stuff-able and sauce-able shapes: Fettucini, Fusilli, Lasagna, Shells, Grand Shells, Spirals, Vegetable Spirals, Elbows, Penne, and Spaghetti. Trisha’s family favorite recipe is a roasted veggie lasagna with farmers’ cheese…lactose AND gluten-free (and quite delicious).
Boxed Mac-and-Cheese is a childhood favorite and there are plenty of healthier options on the market nowadays. Thanks to Annie’s and Road’s End Organics, there are also GF options…perfect for late-night cravings, kids on the go, even camping! Enjoy the following flavors and revel in the cheesy goodness: GF Creamy Deluxe, Rice Pasta & Cheddar, Rice Shells & White Cheddar, Alfredo, Penne & Chreese (this one’s vegan, too).
Finally, we have fresh pasta. Yes, that’s right- gluten-free FRESH pasta! Our owner Katy loves it so much she’s started choosing it over other brands for its texture and taste. It’s from RP’s, lives in our dairy cooler, and offers a few fun shapes like Lasagna, Linguine, and Fettuccine. Try it with simple red sauce and blow away your wheat-eating friends!
