HL Ingredients in Action – Mom & Pop BBQ

Every fourth of July needs a BBQ. This year, Healthy Living spent some quality time at the Mom & Pop BBQ on Broadway in Downtown Saratoga with Adirondack Appliance, Blue Star, and the Big Green Egg. The event was part of the 2013 Saratoga All American Celebration.

Four teams went head to head in this amateur iron chef competition using ingredients provided by Healthy Living.

Each team cooked up a three course meal and presented each dish to the judges. Here is the first appetizer on its way to the judges.

It was a tough competition with incredible recipes being prepared. Most of the dishes were made or finished off on the Big Green Egg, an amazing outdoor cooker that acts as a grill, oven or smoker!


Grilled fruits and veggies made multiple appearances on the judges table. This next dish was part of the winning menu – grilled pineapple, peaches and black cherries with a cayenne chocolate drizzle, yum!

Judging this event did not seem easy, with every team coming up with something new and delicious. The judges are surprised in the photo below at a gorgeous turkey burger with black beans, smoked provolone, avocado, tomato and spinach.

The panel of judges included Melissa Doney of Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen Season 8, Jenny Witte from Mamatoga, and Ashley Dingman from Saratoga Food Fanatic.

After the dishes were plated and served to the judges, the spectators got to indulge in the leftovers. Below the crowd, including Benjamin Franklin, tastes prosciutto macaroni and cheese.

What an amazing evening and an incredible competition! Thank you to all of the chefs and their sous for putting on quite the show, and for all of you who came out to show your support. It was a blast!
