Here’s the new glorious produce and products coming your way this week at Healthy Living!

Produce:

Local Half Pint Farm Microgreens
The “heralds of spring,” our friends Mara and Spencer over at Half Pint Farm, have officially ushered in the season with their tasty microgreens!

Persian Cucumbers
Persian cucumbers are sometimes called “mini cucumbers.” They are in the “burpless, seedless” category of cucumbers because they are a lot more like English cucumbers (the long “seedless” ones), than American cucumbers (blunt, seedy ones).

They have small, soft seeds, a thin, edible skin, and contain less “curcubitacin” , the sometimes-bitter compound responsible for all the cucumber burping (yes, it’s a thing).[

Jicama
Jicama is an unusual root vegetable, it has a very interesting, crunchy texture, and is excellent with lime and chili. Jicama can be kind of large, so if you buy a jicama and need to store the rest, just wrap tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Organic Plantain
Plantains are in season! They are ready to use when they are pretty dark brown/blackish, or if you have less ripe plantains, they are very good for frying and will be more starchy.

Organic Horseradish
Spicy! Just in time for Passover and Easter.

Organic Broccoli Rabe
Broccoli Rabe is back in season! This bunched bitter green is excellent sauteed with olive oil and garlic.

Organic Asparagus
Hurray! Organic asparagus is in season and will be on sale for a few weeks!

Organic Abate Fetel Pears
These are a beautiful and delicious pear variety that is rather elongated, with a russeted greenish yellow skin, often with a red blush. Like all pears, they are ready to eat when they yield to gentle pressure on the neck (near the stem).

​Organic Baby Spinach – Knee Deep Farm
​Super sweet baby spinach is waking up after a long winter of slumber! Spinach does very well in cool temperatures and even can survive hard frosts and being snowed on – the main requirement for it to grow is that it needs some sunlight. This time of year, spinach is the first herald of spring, even if it looks pretty dreary out there.

*Availability is very come-and-go so get it when you see it because we won’t have it every day!
