Flour Tortillas

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening (or real pork lard)
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Mix the flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. Cut the shortening in to the flour mixture with a pastry cutter until the mixture is crumbly. Slowly add the water, mixing with a fork until the mixture forms a dough.  Knead on the counter top until smooth.  Cover and rest for 10 minutes.

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.  With a rolling pin, roll each ball into a 7” circle.  Cook in a hot, dry pan for about 30 seconds on each side.  Kep tortillas warm under a clean towel.
