Wine of the Week – Besllum Montsant 2008

Montsant is a region in Southeast Spain that forms a ring around the highly touted region of Priorat. Priorats tend to be amazing wines but usually fall around the $40 mark, whereas Montsants posses a lot of the same qualities of Priorat without the high price tag.

Grown on hillsides of clay, schist and limestone these wines pick up the minerally aspect of the soil in which they are grown. Deep, dark and rich in color Besllum is comprised of 45% Grenache 45% Carinena (Carignan) and 10% Syrah and aged for 16 months in new French oak. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries follow through on the palate with hints of lavender and spice with a lengthy earthy, minerally finish. Pair this with lamb burgers or grilled meats off the BBQ.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate scored this a 93 with a list price of $34 we have it for $16.99! Another great example of the value coming out of Spain.
