Wine of the Week – Cameron Hughes lot 219 Zinfandel 2009
Cameron Hughes is a modern day negociant, meaning he goes around to high end producers who have excess grapes, buys them, puts his label on them and sells them for a lot less money. Lot 219 zinfandel is pulled from Monte Rosso vineyard which is one of the best sources of Zinfandel in Sonoma County. Originally planted the 1880’s some of the blocks planted in 1890 are still producing fruit!
Lot 219 Zinfandel hails from a program that normally sells its wine for $40-$50 dollars a bottle. Because of nondisclosure agreements Cameron has to sign he cannot reveal the exact source program, but if I had to guess, it probably comes from either Louis Martini or Rosenblum Cellars. The wine shows classic black pepper and brambly berry aromas supported by hints of vanilla and baking spices. The palate follows with ripe blackberries and raspberries with lively acidity and soft tannins. Think BBQ! It’s almost summer!
