Wine of the Week – Noster Priorat 2005

Priorat is one of the most dynamic wine regions of Spain. Located in the Southeast portion the climate combines the benefits of warm days and cool nights. The warmth of the days provides excellent ripeness and the cool nights maintain freshness of the aromatics and acidity. The “soils” here are a combination of black slate and schist. It is literally mountainside rock in which these vines struggle to produce fruit. Because of the nutrient poor soils the vines produce wines with tremendous depth and concentration.

Noster Priorat is a blend of 70% Garnacha 25% Carinena and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from an organically farmed vineyard. The nose is full of ripe cherries, plums and a hint of wood smoke.  Dark berry fruit, cherry plum and blackberry along with cocoa, earth and minerality that comes from the classic Priorat Llicorella (slate) soils. The finish on this wine sails on and on.

We got an incredible deal on this wine and it won’t stick around for long. If you’ve never tried a wine from Priorat this is a great opportunity to try the unique wine from this region at a very humble price. Priorats generally sell in the $30 – $40 range and up, this one we are selling for $14.99. We’ve never seen a Priorat near the $15 mark that was anything to speak of, let alone one of this quality.
